Barry again
Hi Electricfiddler.
Me again. - Not being vain, or anything, but here's one of the clips of us at the Islington Union Chapel in March '07.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IEbhww3QUVI
I'm on a skeleton type 4 string electric, through my Peavey tnt130 bass combo amplifier, which may be of interest, because it can take half a lifetime to find an appropriate sound, mellow, but with enough bite for rock an roll. The pa is some multi kilowatt affair, with an engineer at the desk, but dunno what he's done with the mix. Bass and guitar were through house backline, and I'm not miked through the pa, as is my habit.
Thanks again for the site.

Mykl in Oz
Hi Barry,
I like your style, you have a great feel for the Blues.
The mix on the video was good for the band, the violin sounded a tad thin....was that because of the amp set up with you not going through the PA?
Though I have a slew of gear to choose from in my studio, I run through a Digitech RP2000 on stage. The setup time now is very quick anywhere.....and I do not use an amp, I go through the PA as I haven't found the right amp for violins yet, as I love a full bodied sound...even when distorted.
Keep up the good work, love to jam one day.
Cheers from Oz,
Mykl

the right sound
Hi Mykl.
an honour and a privlege to hear from you - Forgive my ignorance, but I listened to some of that Ascension, and you clearly have recorded sound as you like it! Lovely vibe.
The gig video I have posted was a bit of a compromise; we used the house's backline rather than our own gear, and the pa monitors weren't working at all. - I'm sometimes suprised to see racks of elaborate kit producing average results. My fiddle does sound a tad thin though. Hmmm. My chosen rig has always been a bassamp - perhaps I'll say the camera was handheld at a loudish gig? - Fairly rapid learning curve for me with this particular band though, and I was pleased with getting in control of my sound over the few months we gigged, in a range of venues, experimenting with various amps. - been a while since I'd played live and loud.
On the subject of pa feeds, I've had disastrous sounds emanating from my instrument in the past, and not always me making them, so for now, I like to keep my various controls close by! I don't know if this may be endemic to (or of,) amplified violinists? Anyway, just hope to gain more experience - play more, and hopefully better. Love to play, especially when it's right.
I'll research the equipment you recommend as soon as possible, and once again, many thanks for your comments.
Incidentally, I have a fiddle playing niece in Oz, one Laura Targett. She tells me she played at the Woodford Festival over the New Year?
Cheers.
