electric violin and softsynth

I want to purchase a completely electric violin and I want to be able to plug it into my computer to pass the signal through a softsynth to alter the sound in real time.
Can I do this with a silent violin or do I need a so-called MIDI violin?
If I need a MIDI violin, could you recommend an entry level one, as I'm on a tight budget.
Many thanks
Guy

By softsynth, I *think* you

By softsynth, I *think* you mean a VST synth but correct me if I'm wrong.
To play through software effects on a computer, you don't need a MIDI enabled instrument, just the instrument, the effect plugins and a program to put the two together like Cubase, I know you can apply VST synths and effects to digital input with that program as it's what I use. If your soundcard doesn't have a line-in you can jack in to, consider a cheap usb interface like the Behringer Guitar2usb or something similar, these can be had for around 25-40 bucks, cheaper if you shop around. You will also need ASIO drivers, but, If you're using audio software in real time you probably already know that :D Good luck finding an entry levil midi violin - The only production model MIDI fiddle I know of is made by Zeta and costs upwards of 1300+ bucks, along with it's fancy, though now discontinued synthony processor.
